WFYI plays a crucial role in the central Indiana community as Indianapolis’ flagship PBS and NPR member television and radio stations. In the spring of 2013, WFYI installed a 6,000-square-foot green roof atop its production studio. Prior to the installation of the green roof, audio equipment within the recording studio picked up the sound of rain hitting the roof. The green roof sought to mitigate this problem through the sound-dampening effect of growth media and a tall meadow plant canopy. With the green roof in place, the sound of rain is not audible in the studio, and storms have not stopped production.

The green roof meadow features a variety of native and pollinator-friendly plants including daylilies, echinacea and cosmos flowers. The third and fourth floor offices of the building overlook the green roof. The varied, colorful plant palette provides the overlooking offices an improved view compared to the pre-existing black roof membrane, an unplanned for but delightful benefit for these office tenants.
