Boston Medical Center - Power Plant Farm
Boston Medical Center opened its Power Plant Farm in 2017, hoping to produce fruit and vegetables on their urban campus. Designed and installed by Recover Green Roofs using their Recover Aerated Media Modules, similar to milk crates with polypropylene liners, the project maximizes planting space while allowing sufficient clearance between planter rows for farmer access and tour groups.
Managed since inception by Higher Ground Farm, Omni Infinity Media has been used on this project since 2021. Fruits and vegetables are delivered directly to the hospital’s cafeterias, inpatient units, and Preventive Food Pantry, which disperses healthy food to low-income members of the community. In 2024, over 9,828 pounds of produce were produced at the Power Plant Farm and its sister rooftop project, Haymarket Farm. By growing locally, that’s almost five tons of food that did not need shipping, a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
