Montauk Sofa

a centuries-old technique transforms a former horse stable into a lush showcase and event space

Montauk Sofa's goal to embody exceptional design and quality while embracing sustainability and nature was immediately challenged by the location of their new West Loop showroom. The 150-year-old site was built as a horse stable and had become densely overgrown. Its location along a busy artery beneath an elevated train track made construction access difficult.

As a practical response, Omni Workshop™ employed hügelkultur, the centuries-old technique of mounding compostable plant material which quickly yielded a viable growing medium without the high costs and protracted labor time associated with demolition, excavation, debris removal, soil import, and irrigation. Care was taken during construction to protect and integrate original trees that enfold the site's history.

A choice of paths now leads guests through a verdant threshold of sculpted hillocks where a refined palette of colors and textures reflects Montauk’s own hand-crafted aesthetic. The lush, programmable space acts as a showcase for their luxury outdoor furniture and is used for events that engage clients and neighbors. mission.
