Our Favorite Green Roofs: Kaiser Permanente Health Facility

The Kaiser Permanente Health Facility in Woodbridge, Virginia, stands out as one of our favorite green roofs.

Covering over 13,000 square feet, it features a native meadow grown from seed, made possible by our Omni Infinity Media—a lightweight horticultural growing media with nationwide applications, enabling native meadow ecosystems in just 14 PSF when saturated.

The landscape architect, Mahan Rykiel, went the extra mile in designing a highly biodiverse ecosystem, prioritizing the well-known biophilic benefits of green spaces in healthcare facilities while also minimizing the environmental impact of the site. The collaboration between The Whiting-Turner Contracting CompanyKalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal, and Elevation Greenroofs delivered an exceptional product, combining our lightweight Green Roof Assembly with an American Hydrotech roofing membrane. Despite challenges posed by the Covid-19 Pandemic, this stunning state-of-the-art medical center was successfully completed and expanded essential care for the community.

The local green roof experts, Elevation Greenroofs, continue to play a crucial role through their on-going maintanenace of this Omni Meadow, which boasts an impressive array of plant species, including Asters, Vervain, Trefoil, Coreopsis, Coneflower, Goldenrods, Bergamot, Lupine, and many more. This beautiful habitat supports native pollinators, beneficial insects, and birds.

Our pride stems from witnessing the collective efforts of caring partners, combined with Omni Infinity Media and local expertise, resulting in a final product that goes above and beyond to enhance the health and habitat for people, communities, and ecosystems.
