Lincoln Yards

creating a vibrant & welcoming public right of way in a large-scale, mixed-use development along the Chicago River

Lincoln Yards is a mixed-use development situated on a post-industrial site along the North Branch of the Chicago River. While Lincoln Yards is designed to address the evolving needs of Chicago’s residents, business community, and hospitality industry, its attention to the public realm differentiates it from typical developments of this scale. Omni Workshop is serving as landscape architect for the development’s public right of way, which stitches together the publicly accessible, privately-owned open space and parks throughout the site.

Omni’s work establishes the framework for the development’s streetscapes. This framework offers a unified design approach on both sides of the river to ensure vibrant streets, pedestrian-scaled sidewalks, and an enhanced experience within the neighborhood’s public realm. The objective is to create safe and welcoming streetscapes for a variety of user groups by including quality materials, lush landscape, and comfortable site furnishings.

A key component of the design for the public right of way is to establish and execute a strategy for the urban canopy that will be an integral part of the development. In alignment with the City of Chicago’s tree diversity goals, the proposed tree framework for the development’s streetscapes introduces a varied and choreographed palette for the overall network of new streets.
