AMA Plaza

an Omni Green Roof helps an historic building achieve LEED Gold certification

AMA Plaza is a 52-story commercial tower located in downtown Chicago. The building was the last American building designed by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and has been declared a Chicago Landmark. In 2015, the building received LEED Gold certification, a result of building ownership’s push to meet accredited standards of sustainability and environmental responsibility. As part of this initiative, Omni provided a fully-planted, 5-inch-deep Omni Green Roof tray system for a 6,400 SF sedum roof.

The green roof helps mitigate the urban heat island effect and stormwater runoff, among other environmental benefits that helped the building achieve LEED Gold Certification.

Located 52 stories high, this roof was designed to withstand the extreme environment of skyscraper rooftops. High wind, scour, and dryness stand as obstacles to the health of plants. Accordingly, the irrigation system —unique to Omni green roof trays — helps ensure plant success and vitality in such harsh conditions.

An automatic control station equipped with wind and rain sensors regulates watering time and duration for on-going health and stability of the plants.
