Confluence Framework Plan Kicks off in Albany Park

After a 6-month pro bono framework planning effort ending earlier this year, Omni is excited to be performing landscape architecture services for Ronan Park as the plan launches into the design phase. The project team, including Terra Engineering, Perkins + Will, and Omni Workshop, kicked off with the Chicago Park District this past week.

The framework plan, named Confluence is a collaboration with and the North River Commission (NRC) and Perkins + Will. This community-involved planning project aims to improve and activate a series of sites at Lawrence Avenue and the Chicago River to establish a stronger neighborhood gateway for Albany Park.

Working alongside a multidisciplinary team of architects, urban designers, and community members, the team has developed a vision for the site that aims to make numerous improvements. This includes upgrading pedestrian and bicycle access and safety, enhancing the aesthetics along Lawrence Avenue to create a stronger gateway, opening access to the adjacent Chicago River, while adding flexible, programmable public spaces that welcome people.

The plan also outlines improvements to infrastructure and access to help the on-site, mission-driven Global Garden, to flourish. Ultimately, the project aims to spark equitable economic activity through public realm improvements and leverage the site’s proximity to the river by fostering educational, recreational, and ecological uses along the water at the gateway to Albany Park.

Additional project partners include NeighborSpace, Chicago Mobile Makers, and the Global Garden Refugee Farm. Confluence is a project of Great Rivers Chicago, funded through Our Great Rivers, with generous support from the Chicago Community Trust and assistance from the Metropolitan Planning Council.
