North Union Development Approved by Chicago Plan Commission

We are excited to share that the Chicago Plan Commission has endorsed the multiyear plan to build on Near North Side property owned by Moody Bible Institute, praising the overall design and the collaborative process with community groups that led to the final plan. Omni Workshop is the landscape architect for the project, working alongside HPA, Latent Design and JDL Development as developers.

The North Union mixed-use development includes approximately 1.3 acres of public open space along with a variety of low-, mid- and high-rise buildings that consist of approximately 2,680 residential units and 30,000 SF of commercial space. Located in Chicago’s River North neighborhood, initial goals for the development are to create a new connection between its bordering neighborhoods including Old Town, Gold Coast, Rush and Division, and Cabrini Green; add density the area and provide active uses within the site; and strengthen existing circulation lines to nearby transit.

The proposed landscape design provides numerous public benefits, with more than two acres of publicly accessible open space planned for the site including a 26,500 SF dog park, 20,000 SF contemplative park with public art, and a 20,000 SF park with children's activities and play equipment. The open space is tied together with 20,650 SF of paths, yards, and green spaces, ultimately laying the foundation for the future of this site as one that is accessible, active, and vibrant.
